About 6 months ago we received a request to provide some children’s entertainment for a Polo Club event…we were disappointed that they weren’t referring to the mint form! However, they soon had our attention with the following:
“Imagine a ball hit so hard, speeding towards you at a rate of 110 miles per hour…your job? Stay at a gallop, get your horse in line with the ball and either pass it ahead to a teammate or carry the ball down the field for an attempt at the goal.”
As we were told by a 6 year old polo enthusiast, “Polo is like a hockey match, but quicker and on horses”
Back to the entertainment – It HAD to be hobby horses! Approximately 138 hours, 120g of wool, various cut fingers and 15 attempts later, we found our champion! With the help of our local Scrap Store we got even more creative and turned some sticks, tubes and coloured tape into a mallet suitable even for Adolfo Cambiaso (currently ranked number 1 in the World Polo Tour!)
Each game is played between two teams with four players on each side. The game is divided into short, six minute parts known as Chukkas. The more experienced you are, the more chukkas there are in a game. In all cases, horses are selected for speed, agility, and obedience…thankfully our hobby horses do just that!
Our ‘game’ however, consisted of two 15 minute Chukkas; hobby horse ‘Polo Ponies’ and our pony club ‘mallets’. We think the photos speak for themselves!
